ABOUT MARY LISA
Mary Lisa Harper has moved back to to her eclectic southern roots after living in Denver Colorado for many years. She has been creating her whole life and doing a bit of everything ...
yup....stuff like:
constructing miniature villages out to twigs under the dogwood tree in the front yard, embroidering an intricate mouse circus on her overalls, taking art classes throughout school and getting a Bachelor of Arts degree. She heen a bit of a dabbler of all trades, and is happy to have lived in a makers mindset HER WHOLE LIFE.
Her style is an eclectic fusion—a dynamic dance between drawing and stream-of-consciousness abstractions. Each stroke resonates with fragments of her life experiences, memories, and dreams, intertwining to form a rich tapestry of emotions and reflections. The final phase of her work is a party of doodling and spontaneous mark-making, allowing the artwork to evolve organically. This playful engagement with her medium adds an additional layer of spontaneity and surprise, enhancing the overall narrative.
Mary Lisa's palette is infused with brave touches of neon and metallic. Through color and surprise, she hopes that her art presents as a transformative experience—an invitation for the viewer to delve into the depths of their own subconsciousness, confronting the complexities of existence, and finding solace in the beauty of uncertainty. But most of all, she challenges the viewer to realize that art is a piece of the maker’s soul, given freely.
Often, her subject focuses on a whimsical middle-age woman (her namesake) who wrestles with feelings of fear and invisibility. This character reflects and counsels her own journey through the aging process while infusing elements of humor and joy. Additionally, she draws inspiration from the profound beauty of nature in South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
Mary Lisa has showcased her work in various exhibitions over many years, most recently a solo show at Denver's People's Gallery in 2021, Denver’s Cheeseman Arts Festival in 2022 and the Atalya Arts and Crafts Show, 2024 at Huntington Beach, Sourth Carolina.
